Most people know that reptiles need a place to hide and bask in the sun, but may not know that they also require a substrate or bedding on which to live. This is especially important for small lizards and snakes, which can easily become injured or trapped if they slip through the cracks of an uneven surface.
Sand and gravel are both ideal substrates for reptile pets. They are both relatively easy to clean and are less likely to harbour bacteria or fungus than other materials like wood shavings or straw. Additionally, they do not get soggy when wet and will not stick to your pet’s scales.
Be sure to keep your pets sand and gravel clean and free of waste products. Reptiles can become ill if they ingest too much of their own droppings, so it is important to sweep and change the sand and gravel regularly.
