Rhampholean Brevicaudatus

These animals are found in the Tanzania tropical rain forest.

The Pygmy Chameleon is easy to take care of if you have never owned a chameleon. They are great lizard for a beginner which doesn’t need a lot space or food. They are very beautiful animals that change color to blend in with their environment and they only reach a size of 3 to 4 inches in length.

Pygmy’s need tropical setups and usually ranges in colors from white, yellow, brown, tan, orange or green. They live in moist tropical like conditions, and love hunting for insects. Females will usually only show a pattern when they get exited. Both sexes will turn light yellow if overly stressed and can compress themselves to mimic a leaf. On very extreme occasions they may feign death, drop to the ground and remain motionless. They also have the ability to buzz or vibrate; it is not known why they do this. Their short tails are only prehensile enough to curl into a hook.

These chameleons often stay in one spot for days at a time and may stay in their favorite area most of the time, occasionally descending to the ground to hunt.

Pygmy’s are more active at during the day and have been known to live up to 2 to 3 years in captivity. They seem to do well at temperatures of around 62 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit. You can keep 2 or 3 grown adults in a 15 or 20 gallon tank or vivarium. Decorate the tank with wood, live plants, sand, substrate, and rocks. These animals also enjoy climbing and hanging from branches and bushes. They will readily eat small crickets and other small living insects.
