Size and Longevity:

Geckos can grow anywhere from 7 to 10 inches long with a lifespan up to 20 years.

General Description:

This Gecko is nocturnal and likes living in a warm environment. Almost all Geckos’ eyes have no eyelids, only transparent membranes which they clean by licking. Males should never be housed together since they are territorial and may be aggressive toward other males. When attacked this gecko can detach it’s tail to free itself. After losing it’s tail it may become sick, but that is rare. Most often the tail will grow right back to a shorter and sometimes less colorful version of the original. Geckos come in all sorts of colors which can include pink, blue, and purple and some can change colors to blend in with their background.

Habitat and Cage:

Geckos do not need very much space; a 10 to 20 gallon tank is a good size for one adult. Geckos also love to climb, so adding few climbing perches and limbs is a good idea.Some type of humidity retaining substrate should be provided which is generally sphagnum moss, mulch, or reptile bark. The terrarium should be set up so that there is a heat spot of 100°F with an ambient temperature between 82° and 86°F during the day and 60° to 70°F at night. The temperature should not be allowed to drop below 58°F or be raised above 90°F ambient temperature at any time. Add in a hiding spot or two for the Gecko’s confort. Not providing adequate hiding areas can lead to stress which can cause health problems and a shorter life span.These geckos live in warm environments with moderate winters and their enclosure should imitate this. The humidity should be kept near 80%. Mist the enclosure several times a day to help with humidity, and since geckos may not drink from a water bowl the mist is their only source for water unless you have a drip system.These geckos need from 10 to 12 hours of UVB rays with full spectrum lighting, and 12 to 14 hours of darkness. If heat is a problem, a ceramic heater may be used at any time.

Feeding:

Captive geckos eat mostly crickets. They also eat meal worms, super worms, wax worms, cockroaches, and spiders. Place just a few live insects in their enclosure everyday, but only provide enough to be eaten within a few hours. Sprinkle calcium and multi-vitamins on the insects once or twice a week to keep the Gecko healthier.

Handling:

Handling Geckos too soon after introducing it into a new environment can cause stress and stress related illnesses. Handling is not recommended for at least 2 or 3 days. Geckos are easy to pick up with little or no resistance. Handling them gently and frequently plays a big role in keeping them from becoming aggressive or skiddish.
